How to Play Star Battle

Rules

  • Place exactly 2 stars in each row, column, and region.
  • Stars cannot touch each other — not even diagonally.
  • The thick borders show the region boundaries.
  • Each region is tinted with a subtle color for visibility.

Strategies

  • Look for small regions — fewer cells means fewer possible star placements.
  • Mark cells with × where stars definitely cannot go.
  • Use the adjacency rule to eliminate cells around placed stars.
  • Count remaining candidates per row, column, or region.

Controls

  • Click a cell to place/remove a star (or mark in mark mode).
  • Right-click to quickly toggle a mark.
  • Use arrow keys to navigate.
  • Press S for star, X for mark, M to toggle mark mode.
  • Press H for a hint.

About Einstein Star Battle (10×10, 2★)

Einstein Star Battle is the hardest level: a 10×10 grid with 2 stars per row, column, and region, selected from a separate pool of the most challenging configurations. These puzzles have the tightest constraints and require the longest deduction chains of any Star Battle level we offer.

Every placement at this level should follow from observable logic. Combine region confinement, reverse confinement, 2-star spacing analysis, and row/column counting simultaneously. When one chain stalls, switch to a different region or line. The solution path often requires working from multiple starting points that converge in the middle of the grid.

These puzzles reward methodical solving over speed. Mark every eliminated cell, re-scan after every star placement, and trust the constraints. Also see the hardest puzzles page for more einstein-level challenges across all puzzle types.
