About easy crosswords

Easy crosswords use a 7×7 grid with common English words and direct definition clues. Most entries are 3–5 letters long, and the grid has generous black-square spacing so each entry crosses only a few others. You can usually solve every clue on its own without needing crossing letters.

This is the right starting point if you have not solved crosswords before or if you want a quick puzzle during a break. Most people finish a 7×7 in 2–4 minutes. Once the small grid feels routine, step up to medium where the grid grows to 9×9 and clues get less direct.
